Kerala has always reigned supreme in the production and export of this most exotic and sought-after spice Pepper.In India over 75 varieties or cultivars of pepper are grown. Karimunda is the most popular among them. Other important varieties are Kottanadan, Narayakodi, Aimpiriyan, Neelamundi, Kuthiravally, Balancotta, and Kalluvally .

Cultivation: The plant requires a long rainy season, high temperatures, and partial shade for the best growth. Propagation is usually by stem cuttings. The cuttings are set out near a tree or a pole that will serve as a support. The berries are picked when they begin to turn red.
